Dalmais), Clément Ducol and Jacques Audiard Starring Zoe Saldana. Emilia Pérez disappointed me more than she inspired me. On paper, the premise of a cartel boss transitioning into a new identity in a violent and hyper-masculine world seems like it offers huge potential. Unfortunately, the film’s execution falls short of that promise. The lack of focus and disjointed storytelling leave too much to be desired, making it a frustrating experience. One of my biggest issues is how the story tries to explore too many themes without committing.
Is it a film about transitioning?
Sometimes it is, but that’s just scratching the surface. Instead of delving into the emotional and physical complexities of transitioning, especially from such a unique position of power and violence, the film veers off in unrelated directions, turning into a kidnapping story, a love triangle, a commentary on the fighting in Mexico, and more. These shifts left it feeling aimless, as if it was afraid to commit to the kind of depth that the underlying premise demanded. The film certainly has its merits. The musical numbers are surprisingly catchy and, for me, the only element that consistently worked. Even as someone who isn’t the biggest fan of musicals, I appreciate these moments, especially those centered around Emilia herself.
Visually, Emilia Pérez also impressed me at times
When the character sings, there’s an emotional resonance that the rest of the film fails to capture. The creative use of lighting and shadows stood out, especially during intense scenes. It seemed like a clever way to create tension and emotion without relying on expensive effects. For example, the car crash scene managed to convey chaos without showing every detail, which I thought was a sensible and effective choice. However, these positive aspects don’t outweigh the film’s inconsistencies. The lack of focus made it difficult to relate to the characters or their struggles.
It’s a film that tries to do too much and ends up achieving too little
By the end of the film, I was left with no strong emotions or questions, only disappointment at what could have been. Overall, while Emilia Pérez has a few standout moments, her inability to fully commit to the premise left me unsatisfied.
