Scenario

Investigating judge Iman grapples with paranoia during political unrest in Tehran

When his gun goes missing, he becomes suspicious of his wife and daughters, imposing draconian measures that strain family bonds as social norms crumble. Director Mohammad Rasoulof was originally scheduled to attend the 2023 Cannes Film Festival as a member of the Un Certain Regard jury. However, he was arrested in July 2022 after criticizing the government’s crackdown on protesters in the southwestern city of Abadan in Iran following the deadly collapse of a building.

On May 12, 2024, Rasouloff announced that he had managed to escape Iran and was staying at an undisclosed location in Europe

On May 8, 2024, Rasouloff’s lawyer announced that he had been sentenced to eight years in prison, in addition to flogging, a fine and confiscation of his assets. On May 24, 2024, Rasouloff attended the film’s premiere in Cannes and on the red carpet showed off photos of two of the film’s actors, Soheila Golestani and Missagh Zareh. There is a fine line between a faux documentary and a masterpiece and somehow this film manages to be both.

But that’s when the story starts to fall apart

As an Iranian I was amazed by the cinematography and how it was shot without a warrant in Iran’s capital city, Tehran (most of the time). The plot is mostly well written and most of the characters act under a cloak of real characters in Iran and two of whom reach their final form of women fighting the dictator… The story and dialogues fade and become irrational just because the director is pushing the dialogues to be politically justified!

The editing is a problem and makes the film boring

Rasouloff gets lost with his character development and the film is still a stretched 160 minutes. This is officially the last film Rasulof has directed in Iran due to the ban on returning to his homeland. Overall, this film does a lot to share a message about the future of Iran because it contains the story of a certain generation (youth and teenagers).
